February is National Children’s Dental Health Month  Get a Gold Medal Smile  Each year, the American Dental Association sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month in order to raise awareness of good oral health and dental hygiene. This year, the theme for the month is to “Get a Gold Medal Smile.” At Cumming’s Family Dentist, we want to join the ADA in promoting good oral health and good dental habits this month. Mothers Play a Vital Role in Early Childhood Dental Health Development   The British Dental Health Foundation looks to a new study showing how a mother’s knowledge is key to their child’s oral health.    According to the study,mothers with higher involvement in their child’s early formative years resulted in a better oral hygiene for their child. These results occurred due to more visits to the dentist and more preventive treatments, resulting in a reduced risk of tooth decay and gum disease.    Good nutrition for a mother during pregnancy is also crucial for her baby’s teeth to develop correctly. Poor dental health is constantly being linked with a variety of diseases, and scheduling routine cleanings and checkups are very important for oral health in both adults and children.    So, to all the current and future mothers out there:  Keep your teeth healthy and stay involved with your kids to keep their teeth healthy as well. Tips on Good Oral Health for Your Children   The Colgate® Oral & Dental Health Resource Center is an advocate for teaching healthy dental habits to your children from the beginning.    It’s not always easy to teach children new habits–especially when it comes to maintaining those practices. The key is making good oral health a positive experience for your children, and making sure that when you supervise your child’s brushing, you are going through the same steps each time.   The Do’s & Don’ts of Properly Brushing Your Child’s Teeth:  Do use ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste (only a small amount). Don’t let your child swallow the toothpaste. Do pick out a toothbrush with soft bristles. Don’t brush aggressively, but rather, gently back and forth. Do angle the brush so that the bristles are facing towards the gum line. A Quick Look at Plaque   If you can run your tongue over your teeth and feel a fuzzy coating on them, chances are, you have plaque. While a little plaque is normal, that doesn’t mean it’s good for your teeth. Let’s look at why it’s bad, and how to get rid of the furry fiend before your holiday parties start. What is plaque and where does it come from?    Plaque is a sticky substance that contains the bacteria that live in your mouth. These bacteria cling to your teeth and cause decay. The bacteria in plaque eat sugars. Just like any other living organism, they create waste products as they digest the sugars. These waste products are acids that break down tooth enamel and cause cavities.    Fight Plaque During the Holiday Season    To reduce the amount of plaque on your teeth, do the following:  Floss once a day. Fight the urge to try every holiday dessert and lessen the amount of sugary and carbohydrate-rich food you eat. Brush at least twice a day. Quit smoking.
